Mozilla Creative Collective

In early 2009, Mozilla approached Happy Cog to help them create a place for like-minded designers to connect, riff, collaborate, and congenially compete against each other. Eager to harness the tireless creativity and energy of its users, Mozilla set out to create a new community that encouraged and rewarded all levels of participation.

With that goal in mind, Happy Cog began an intensive research phase, working with the client to capture exactly how this art/play site would function. Through many iterations of information architecture, we brought complex behaviors into the user experience via a deceptively simple-looking interface. Happy Cog also outlined the framework for the site’s achievement system, creating a set of achievements and their related badges to entice and incite designers to share quality work with their colleagues and solicit constructive feedback and comments.

Moving into design, the client provided a wonderful logo designed by Shepherd Fairey’s Studio Number One. Happy Cog played off the themes of Fairey’s strong, iconic mark: the final result is refined in its revolution, equal parts proletariat and polish, grunge and grace.
